JennyStar DVD Rentals "ARTIST OF THE MONTH" SELECTION

Michael Caine, born Maurice Micklewhite in London in 1933, was the son of a fish-market porter and a charlady.  He left school at 15 and took a series of working-class jobs before joining the British army and serving in Korea during the Korean War, where he saw combat. Upon his return to England he got a job as an assistant stage manager.  He adopted the name of Caine on the advice of his agent, taking it from a marquee that advertised The Caine Mutiny (1954).  He worked in over 100 television dramas, with repertory companies throughout England. " Zulu, the 1964 epic retelling of a 19th-century battle between British soldiers and Zulu warriors, brought Caine to international attention.
His title role in
Alfie (1966) made Caine a star of the first magnitude. He epitomized the new breed of actor in mid-'60s England, the working-class bloke with glasses and a down-home accent. However, after initially starring in some excellent films, he seemed to take on roles in below-average films, simply for the money he could by then command. There were some gems amongst the dross, however.  He gave a magnificent performance opposite Sean Connery in The Man Who Would Be King (1975).  Educating Rita (1983) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) (for which he won his first Oscar) were highlights of the 1980s, while more recently The Cider House Rules (1999) (his second Oscar) and Alfie, the remake (2004) have been widely acclaimed.

Humphrey Bogart, born 1899, was educated at Trinity School, New York City and sent to Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass, in preparation for medical studies at Yale. He was expelled from Phillips and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve. In the 1920's, he managed a stage company and performed a variety of tasks at a film studio in New York. In 1930, he gained a contract with Fox and later with Warner Bros.  After years of minor film roles, he had his breakthrough in The Petrified Forest (1936), which was a success and led to a long-term contract with Warner Bros. From 1936 to 1940, Bogart appeared in 28 films, usually as a gangster, twice in Westerns and even a horror film.

His landmark year was 1941 with roles in classics such as
High Sierra and as Sam Spade in one of his most fondly remembered films, The Maltese Falcon (1941). These were followed by Casablanca (1942), The Big Sleep (1946), and Key Largo (1948). Bogart, despite his erratic education, was incredibly well-read and he favored writers and intellectuals within his small circle of friends. In 1947, he joined wife Lauren Bacall and other actors protesting the House Un-American Activities Committee witch hunts. He formed his own production company, and made The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948).  Bogie won the best actor Academy Award for The African Queen (1951) and was nominated for Casablanca (1942) and as Captain Queeg in The Caine Mutiny (1954), a film made when he was already seriously ill. He died following a battle with throat cancer, in 1957.
